Pray for Eliza

We learned yesterday that our daughter Eliza (almost 11 months) has what appears to be a cancerous tumor in her liver. Melissa took her to the doctor for an ear infection, and while doing a general checkup the doctor was concerned about possible swelling in her abdomen. They sent us to the hospital, where an ultrasound found the tumor.

We were able to meet immediately with a pediatric oncologist, who laid out a plan for getting started with treatment: blood tests right away, and a battery of other scans and tests Monday to confirm that it’s the type of tumor they think. Then there will probably be chemo and surgery, though we’re not sure of the order.

There are some encouraging signs. The tumor is large, but it’s isolated to one side of the liver. From the ultrasound it did not appear to have spread to any other organs. If it’s the kind of tumor the doctor suspects, and if that type of tumor doesn’t metastasize, and when they’re able to remove it completely, the survival rate is as high as 90%. But it is unbelievably scary.

We need you to pray. You can imagine how our heads are spinning, and how the questions and needs are wherever you look. So pray whatever you think to pray. But here are some specifics.

***

Pray for complete healing. That the tumor will be gone entirely on Monday. God can do that. And that if it’s still there, it won’t have metastasized, and they’ll be able to remove all of it with a good margin. That the drug treatment will do its job, and that God will sustain E through all the misery of chemotherapy. Pray that this is completely healed and that it never returns.

Pray for clear communication with all the doctors, and for lots of translators to be available when needed.

Pray for our decision about whether to do treatment in CZ or US. So far we feel like the doctors here are doing the same things here they’d do in the States. And we are happy here and have no need to escape. But there are a thousand other factors to consider as well. Please pray for clear heads, and for Melissa and Jake to have the same strong leaning.

We are terrified. And we are hopeful, sometimes. At times it feels like the waters are closing over our heads. We break down, we pray, and they recede for a while. Many of you have already been sending us Scripture and reminding us that you’re praying. Thank you. Please keep it up. We love Eliza so much, and so do many others. But God loves her more than we do, and he knows her body because he created it. We trust him to care for her (and us), because he is good.

Thank you for praying.

Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand. (Psalm 17:7)

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18)

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble… The Lord of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. (Psalm 46)

  1. Oh we are so sorry to hear this. Good job to that Paediatrician who felt her abdomen instead of just peaking in her ears, and followed up on what was suspected. The story of Abraham and Isaac comes to mind, and the end point is that God will PROVIDE. Surgery, chemo, healing, strength, faith, wisdom, direction. This is a terribly rough road. Robert and Lois Carr might be an encouragement to you (just moved back to US from KEnya, their son went through leukemia and is OK). Thanks for letting us all know how to pray.

  2. Praying for each of you Jake. I know God has a plan and He will bless Eliza in this and through this! Love you

  3. We are praying! We pray for courage, strength and wisdom. We commit to pray with you through out

  4. Praying for peace and wisdom!

  5. All of you are in my prayers.

  6. I see our ABBA’s fingerprints already… What are the chances that a routine ear infection would have led to the discovery of the tumor? And Eliza has two deeply committed believers for parents who will storm heaven for miraculous results! Father, we beg you to speak healing into Eliza’s little body for complete healing so that there would be no evidence of a tumor when the doctors examine her. And if not, please use the skills of the medical staff to completely remove the tumor with perfect margins and no return! Fill the Hunt family with supernatural faith to courageously walk through each step of this process and empower them to gaze at you and only glance at the situation, knowing that Emmanuel is constantly with them and deeply involved in every detail. Let them see you as never before, as the one true God filled with goodness, mercy, grace, and lovingkindness. Magnify yourself, ADONAI, to all who are watching your works unfold. Amen

  7. I just learned about this cute little girl, Eliza/Blue Sky. Praying for her and her family. Blessings to overflowing….

  8. Oh, Hunts. This makes my heart so heavy. I know (better than some) the burden and fear that cancer stirs up, but I can’t imagine facing this with your child, your baby. I will be praying for Eliza and all of you. Praying for peace and guidance. I know for me one of the hardest things has been weighing treatment options and choosing what’s best for us, I can only imagine that the weight and responsibility of that would be even worse when dealing with your child. Please know that we will be praying hard and holding you in our hearts. Hugs!!

  9. We love you all soo much and I am just stunned with your news. Great and many prayers will be sent your way. I can’t imagine the decisions you must make in the care of this precious little angel, but your pain is our pain. Your family will always be here for you all.

  12. Tonight, Grace and I prayed for Baby Eliza. I reminded her that she was really sick when she was a baby but that people prayed for her and God healed her. I love that she now has the opportunity and ability to pray for your sweet girl. The Westmorelands will be praying for ALL of you!

  13. My heart is just aching for you all tonight. Have been praying since first reading about Eliza this afternoon, and will continue to pray throughout the difficult days to come. All our love and prayers to you Hunts…the Coles

  14. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand…. For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear;
    I will help you.” Isaiah 41: 10,13
Praying! Recently someone told me that our God doesn’t get surprised. Before our world falls apart, He is already working on the restoration plan. Praise God that Eliza had an earache and an attentive doctor that did a full exam instead of just treating the ear! God is with you! Consider me a pediatric oncology phone a friend. Email me with any questions (mo@beholdministries.com). – Nurse Mo:-)

  15. We are praying for you and your dear little girl.

  16. Praying for beautiful Eliza, for peace and wisdom for you both.

  17. Jake, Melissa and family,
Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all today and over the coming months… We will lift Elizabeth’s name up – that she will be secured by the healing hands of the Great Physician, and that you will be encouraged by His constant presence!

  18. Hey Jake, I just saw this come across my Facebook feed. I’m so sorry to hear this news about Eliza. We will be praying for your daughter to be healed and for excellent doctors who will make the best decisions for her. I know the question of ‘where’ is a challenging one. Praying the Lord gives you clarity as you decide whether or not to return to the US for treatment. Also praying that God shows himself incredibly faithful to sustain and grow your family and heal Eliza. -Lance

  19. My prayers are with you. May God’s grace surround you and His hands hold you in His powerful presence.

  20. Hello Melissa and Jake, it is a very hard time your family is going through. You are in our thoughts and prayers. If I could be any of help in terms of translation, please e-mail me. I’m unfortunately out of Prague until 11th August, but then here all the time.

  21. You may already know about this, but many people have been healed of cancer through the Healing Rooms at my church. A friend of mine was healed of esophagal cancer several years ago while visiting the church. He is still cancer-free. You can skype the Healing Rooms from anywhere.

  22. Praying for you guys and for complete healing of little Eliza and for the presence and comfort of the Holy Spirit to be rich and tangible to you both right now and to Eliza and the boys

  23. Hi Melissa

A good friend of mine from NZ son was also diagnosed with cancer this year (only a little older than Eliza). Amazing family on a faith journey of healing for their son Aaron. He has a FB page https://www.facebook.com/AaronsJourneyOfHope?fref=ts if you would like to get in contact with a Christian family who is currently processing and walking a very similar journey to you.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Ephesians 6:10

  24. Praying for y’all and for Eliza and for complete healing and comfort and peace.

    Blessings!

  25. We heard about your precious daughter Eliza through a FB post by mutual friends. We are missionaries serving in Liberec, CZ for the past 15 years. Five years ago Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer. She received all of her treatment; surgery, chemo, radiation and follow-up right here is Liberec and has thoroughly researched cancer treatment both here and in the States. There is no doubt that treatment here is as good and, in some cases, superior to that available in the States. Please do not make you treatment decisions based on a sense that the quality is better elsewhere. Our toughest cases are sent to Prague so you are in the center of the best care available. By the way, Linda has been fully monitored and has been cancer free for four years; Praise Him..!
On top of that, the Great Physician does maintain offices right here so you have full assurance that Eliza is in the best of hands. We will be praying for your family and your daughter as He brings you to our remembrance. He is able..!

Please try to keep us updated.

  26. We are keeping you all in our prayers. Much love from the Culbertsons

  27. Praying for her! I am sure she will get well soon, very soon!

  31. Praying for you and your beautiful daughter from Alabama.

  32. Prayers for your whole family and for the complete healing of Miss Eliza. We praise the Lord for her!

  33. O Lord, be gracious to us; we wait for you. Be our arm every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble. Is. 33:2

Jake and Melissa, Each day you are on my mind. I, with so many others, am praying for you and especially for precious Eliza, that the Lord would bring her complete health and the vigor we delight in when we watch our little ones grow.

Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees! Is. 35:3

I know you need the special strength God gives for these difficult, tiring days and decisions.

With love for each one of you,
    Ann

  34. You have all our prayers hugs and support. Love Jim and nancy crum
