Monday: on the move again

Sentences you never thought you’d say: “Yay! We’re back on the oncology ward!”

But yay, because that means Eliza has healed enough to leave the surgical ward. Oncology has more freedom (no scrubs for us, you can press a button instead of personally seeking out a nurse to buzz you out, we’re allowed to use the kitchen). But we loved our nurses on the surgery ward– they were so sweet and careful with E, listened to Melissa’s concerns and questions, and as a bonus a couple spoke good English. Oncology is a little more like staying in a dorm and having RA’s who make sure you do what you’re supposed to.

She won’t be getting another round of chemo before coming home like we thought– she’s in oncology for them to redo all their tests and establish what needs to happen with chemo. So tomorrow she’ll have an ultrasound and some sort of kidney test, then a CT scan Wednesday, and assuming all that’s good, HOME. On Wednesday. Two days from now. We are so, so excited.

We knew these tests would happen, but we’re still nervous about them. She’s had a few MRI’s, I think 2 CT scans, and several ultrasounds since her diagnosis, including some since the surgery, and none of them have ever suggested any cancer outside the liver. So we have every reason to think the news will be good. But the waves of fear were crashing over us today, me (Jake) in particular. So please pray that we get more good news on Wednesday, and that she’ll be home when the boys get home from school.

E continues to be more herself every day. Today she was talking, smiling, laughing, all that. You could even see her starting to go into a crawl– and then rethinking that plan when the pain hit. She was all smiles while talking to her brothers tonight, and so were they when they heard she might be coming home soon. Tonight before bed Foard said out of the blue, “I love you Daddy. And I love Eliza so much.” So do we, buddy.

When the waves come up over my head I try to talk some sense into myself with Psalm 46. Join us in praying that God will be our fortress, and that we will have a week of celebrating.

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Come, behold the works of the LORD,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”

The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

  1. SO excited for y’all! And that E is feeling more like herself again! Such good news! Praying for amazing test results!! And also asking the Lord’s perfect love and gladness to be washed over you! Love that imagery from Psalm 46 of there being peace and rest in the midst of chaos. Reminds me of the banqueting table in the presence of our enemies from Psalm 23. Praying for you and Face to dine and rest in that perfect love that casts out all fear- in a supernatural way!

  2. We are PTL for that precious smile!

  3. we have been following all the news and continue to say prayers your lives will once again have some sense of normalcy soon. please say hello to your mom Melissa. thank you for such a wonderful web site since we are all so far away. love and hugs to the whole family jim and nancy crum

  4. God is GOOD! Sometimes his messages are sent to us through the most honest of ways. This time, it seems, through Foard expressing his love for his sister!

    Pull each other close and always listen for His messages. Especially in the voice of a child.

    We are praying for you every day! God Bless, Cindi and KW
